Our Competitive team swims year round September - July. A tryout is required before registration. Please contacting the appropriate Coach below for more information about their group.



Stroke School

Our Stroke School is devoted to competitive stroke instruction with an emphasis on balance in the water through specialized drills. The program is for swimmer under 14 looking for a supplement for summer league. 


Learn to

Our Swim School has been serving the DC area for over 30 years. We have a wide variety of learn to swim classes for ages 3 - 8 years old at American University.

Tim Kelly

Head Coach - Gold & Senior Prep

Tim Kelly has been coaching full time for the past 26 years and first started coaching with the club in 1995 where he coached 3.5 years at the Tyson’s Corner site. After that he spent 8 years of coaching at the collegiate level, at Purdue University and Davidson College. He then returned to NCAP in the spring of 2006 as the Head Coach of the American University site. As a swimmer he was a Sr. National and Division I NCAA qualifier at Southern Illinois University. His wife Abby swam for the club back in 1978 when the club first started and his kids (Jordan and Madison) learned to swim and still swim with the club.

Ian Rowe

Silver & Senior Prep

Ian has been with NCAP since the summer of 2012. He has been the lead Silver coach for that time while also assisting the Gold, Sr Prep and Bronze 2 groups. Prior to joining NCAP Ian was the Head Age Group Coach at Club Seminole in Tallahassee, Florida. As a swimmer Ian was a world ranked distance freestyler, and competed all four years at Florida State where he was an All American and team captain. Prior to Florida State, Ian grew up swimming for NBAC and was a member of the 2006-2007 National Junior Team.

Tamara Lowengrub

Tamara (Tammy) joined the club team in 2006 as a Master's Coach and since 2008 has been head-coach of the Bronze 1 & 2 Age-Group teams at the American University location. Tammy is also an accomplished open water swimmer, completing races in the Chesapeake, La Jolla, and Wameia. She has worked with Wave One swimming, teaching all levels of swimmers to love open water. Prior to coaching with NCAP, Tammy worked as a registered Dietitian in both clinical and education settings including Walter Boswell Memorial Hospital, Paradise Valley School food service and Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute. In addition, she wrote the nutrition focused column for Swimming World Magazine from 1996-2000. Most recently, she taught an introductory nutrition class at American University. She continues to use her Masters in Clinical Nutrition through her work with NCAP by providing monthly nutritional emails to the swimmers and their families. Tammy began her love of swimming and enjoyed great success as an undergraduate swimmer at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. She graduated from Kenyon College in 1993 with Honors in Biology. A New York Native, Tammy specialized in the 100 and 200 breast. She helped lead the Kenyon Ladies to their 10th NCAA DIII Swimming Championship. Tammy also had the opportunity to work with Kenyon College Coach, Jim Steen, on his Total Performance Swim Camps in Ohio. Tammy lives in Washington, DC with her husband, Paul and their four children, Cara, Evan, Rere and Matthew.
